When the person finally left, she went to investigate and noticed something strange on the handle: a rubber band holding the door latch open.

 When she told her local sheriff, he told her that this wasn't the first time someone had reported something like this. "The Sheriff came by yesterday and said this is happening all of a sudden, as soon as you unlatch the door, they do not wait for you to turn the knob, they can bust in on you." Kim recommended to "NOT answer doors without knowing who is on the other side."
